, and for our entire economy. but the hour for immediate action is here. it is now. >> senate leaders harry reid and mitch mcconnell were back at the capitol in no time. mcconnell gathered his members to inform them of the work that needs to be done. >> we had a good meeting down at the white house. we are engaged in discussions, the majority leader and myself and the white house, in the hopes that we can come forward, as early as sunday, and have a recommendation, that i can make to my conference and the majority leader can make to his conference, so we'll be working hard to try to see if we can get there in the next 24 hours. so i'm hopeful and optimistic. >> i'm going to do everything that i can. i'm confident senator mcconnell will do the same. but everybody, this is -- whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect and some people aren't going to like it. some people will like it less, but that's where we are. and i feel confident that we have an obligation to do the best we can and that was made very clear in the white house. and we're going to do the best we can for the caucuses that w

that vice president biden has been the good cop to harry reid's bad cop. 10 he has really helped to move things along. but right now things are merging behind the scenes. talks are continuing. again, the vice president, if he feels is needed will head over to the hill. milissa? >> do you see the same blame game going on as was happening yesterday with all the fingers pointing back and forth at each other saying it's your fault, no, it's yours? and do you any that we'll be hearing more from the president tonight? >> well, of course, it's always an open question if we'll be hearing more from the president. there is no word yet if we will actually be hearing from him tonight. it is getting quite late. so i think that the chance is diminished by the hour. but the president did point some fingers today. he had some sharp words for republicans in congress. essentially saying that they couldn't get a big deal done because not enough of them would get on board. that really rangled some folks on the hill. some folks wondered if it was potentially the wrong move to come out today with such strong

're not hearing much about that. majority leader harry reid in the senate, he has been critical in getting things done for the president, but in these last 48 hours or so, his role has been a little bit to the sidelines as the vice president has taken center stage for democrats. and has been able to try to bring this deal together, i also saw in the hallways tone, the president's liason of congress. he has been here working on all kinds of issues, he has a lot invested in this too. there will be people who most folks will never know their names, the key staffers who work very close well these leader who's have done most of the heavy lifting to get to a deal. mitch mcconnell, up for re-election in his home state in 204 1 4 and has that to consider as he goes forward as you think about the pressure on republicans to raise taxes in this deal. they are going to acknowledge doing that. that can be difficult, as well as will they be able to achieve enough spending cuts. there is a political issue for mitch mcconnell personally as well as trying to lead republicans. the president will have made an achie

harry reid took to the senate floor this morning to, shall we say, let boehner have it. >> if we go over the cliff, and it looks like that's where we're headed, mr. president, the house of representatives as we speak, with four days left after today before the first of the year aren't here with the speaker having told them they'll have -- they'll give them 48 hours' notice. the american people i don't think understand the house of representatives is operating without the house of representatives. it's being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker, not allowing the vast majority of the house of representatives to get what they want. >> lo and behold, the markets started to tank, in part on fears of reid's warning that it looked like we were going over the cliff. within an hour word came that the house would return to washington and be in session on sunday at 6:30 p.m. boehner repeated his assertion that the senate would pass the two bills that the house has already acted on and included an extension of all the bush tax cuts, something that has zero chance of passing the senate. meanwh
